Sergio is a member of the Memory Studies Association, the international scholarly organization which gathers researchers on memory studies, activists and the most distinguished academic voices in the field. For its 3rd International Conference in Madrid in June 2019, Sergio was invited to present his practice as an architect who applies memory studies to the creation of memorials to victims on violence in Mexico.
He shared the panel with Moniek Driesse, a design researcher who focuses on the reactions to the social, cultural and political conditions of urban contexts; Sjamme van de Voort, a historian who investigates the role that dynamics of cultural memory of Cubans have in the formation of the ideology of a diaspora that is deeply vested in the future of a place from which they see themselves exiled; and Gunnar Olsson, a Swedish geographer, philosopher and professor emeritus at the University of Uppsala.
